Cotton fabric crochet rugs and painted on canvas floor cloths have long and interesting histories. Both have been recognized for their beauty, usefulness and durability and both can become heirlooms. That is why I went back to working in these genre ten years ago. Currently I'm featuring some of my cotton crochet rugs and will have a new selection of painted canvas floor covering soon.

The cotton crochet rugs are made with first quality fabric. These have a high thread count and reliable color fastness. I choose the colors and prints individually, cut the material, fold each long narrow piece and assemble the lengths ready for crochet. Patterns and designs within the crochet work are a matter of counting stitches and measuring piece by piece. Each square foot of rug takes four square yards of cloth. This gives a luxurious thickness that, to me, feels like a foot massage when walking across.

My inspiration comes from life in the mountains around the farm I've called home for twenty-four years. And living with some of the rugs has demonstrated their strenght and ease of care. The smaller cotton crochet rugs can be tumble washed (no agitators, please). Over three foot size, because of their thickness and wet weight should be dry cleaned. This usually costs about fifteen dollars. Spot cleaning is easy by blotting the spill, placing an absorbant material under the rug and using a mild soap and warm water, then blotting again. The painted canvas floor coverings can be wiped off with a damp sponge and mild detergent.
