He's held positions in Public Affairs and Disaster Services at the national headquarters of the American Red Cross, and undertook emergency relief assignments in Latin America and the Caribbean for the World Health Organization, the Organization of American States, and the United Nations. In the private sector, Michael spent five years as Project General Manager for Concordia, an award winning eco-tourism resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He also spent two years in Belize managing development for a lodging and excursion operation near the Guatemalan border. In North Carolina, Michael has worked as General Manager and a Spanish language trainer for the Extended Stay America hotel chain. Over the last 14 years, Michael's work and studies have taken him to 40 countries across Europe, the Balkans, the Near East, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. He speaks fluent Spanish, and was an instructor in English as a Second Language for community colleges. He calls Haywood County home, where he lives with his wife Julia.
