A Hat Shop
About 8 years ago I overheard a conversation about people who had jobs they loved. Later that evening I thought about that conversation and wondered what I would be doing - if I was doing what I truly loved! Making hats. Seemed simple enough - but when I first started making hats, I was 18 years old and living in Dearborn Michigan and was able to drive downtown to Detroit to obtain my millinery supplies. Now I live in Franklin and my drive is to Wal Mart for supplies? How could I do this - when I now knew this is what I wanted. The internet provided my sources and I was off and running - or should I say, sewing. Now that I was making hats I felt I should market them whenever possible so that meant I would always wear one of my hats when I left the house. One day as I went into a gift shop the lady complimented me on my hat also telling me she was interested in selling hats. She now carries my hats! I realized that a small town was not the answer - I needed the internet. I went to college for a year to learn how to create my own website and a year ago, was listed as # 9 of the 40 success stories among all the community colleges in North Carolina. My sales have grown beyond my wildest dreams and I now am selling both retail and wholesale. The internet has also brought about international sales. I am living proof that you should follow your dreams - they do come true!
